How to Restore Weathered Gray Teak Patio Furniture

Gray teak is surface oxidation, not damage. Cleaning the wood, letting it dry completely, sanding progressively, and then oiling or sealing it restores the warm natural color and a smooth splinter-free surface. Teak left unfinished stays structurally sound but keeps its silver patina and rough grain.

Why outdoor teak goes gray in Southern California

Teak's natural oils sit near the surface. Sun and dry heat break those oils down, and the outer wood fibers oxidize to a silver-gray layer while the wood underneath stays intact.

Sprinkler overspray, sunscreen, and pool splash add staining and mildew on top of that layer, which is why cleaning alone often leaves furniture looking blotchy.

What restoration involves

Deep cleaning removes dirt, mildew, and old failed finish. The wood then has to dry fully — sanding damp teak clogs abrasives and leaves a fuzzy surface.

Progressive sanding takes off the oxidized layer, flattens raised grain, and removes splinters. Loose slats, stripped bolts, and split joinery are repaired while the piece is apart.

Finishing is a choice: teak oil gives the warm honey color but needs reapplying periodically, while a penetrating sealer keeps a cleaner, lower-maintenance natural look.

What not to do

Pressure washing at close range erodes soft grain and permanently roughens the surface. Bleach-heavy cleaners can lighten the wood unevenly, and film-forming varnishes tend to peel outdoors in Los Angeles sun.

Fine surface cracking, called checking, is normal in outdoor teak and stays cosmetic. Structural cracks through a joint are different and should be repaired.
